エプレレノンは体内のホルモン、アルドステロンの働きをブロックします。アルドステロンは、血圧の調節に重要です。エプレレノンは、心臓発作後の鬱血性心不全を治療するために用いられます。エプレレノンは高血圧（高血圧症）の治療にも用いられます。

ジェネリックのアルダクトン（Aldactone）とは、うっ血性心不全、腎臓病（ネフローゼ症候群）あるいは肝硬変の患者には体液貯留および腫脹の治療に使用される薬です。それはまた、高血圧の治療にも使用されます。低血圧のカリウムの治療または予防にも使用されることが出来ます。
